Scrap outmoded WASSCE; get new independent exam body – NAGRAT

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), is proposing the establishment of an independent national examination agency to oversee all examinations in the country, following the latest leakage of three exam papers in the ongoing West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

NAGRAT’s call follows reports of the leakage of at least four papers in the ongoing exams.

Some students in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions reportedly had access to the examination papers between 12:00am and 4:00a.m on the day the papers were written.

The Oral English, Integrated Science, Physics and Social Studies papers, were reportedly leaked with pictures on social media even showing students solving the questions.

Last year, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) dismissed two of its employees after a similar leak in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Vice President of NAGRAT, Angel Kabonu said, the only way to prevent exam paper leakages was to abolish the system where the same papers are written by students in all Anglophone West African countries.

Mr Karbonu argued that examinations like the British General Certificate of Education (GCE’s) were written in Ghana without leakages and questioned why WAEC exams were increasingly being associated with leakages.

“The question now is that how come when WAEC administers an examination, there are leakages?”

    WASSCE should be scrapped

The Vice President of NAGRAT also described the idea of West African countries writing a single examination as out-of-date.

“That concept where examinations are written internationally among all the West African countries is archaic and outmoded… You don’t get into any modern jurisdiction or into Europe and you have all the European countries writing the same examination from the same company or the same institution.”

Mr. Karbonu recalled the days when Ghana had the Senior Secondary Certificate Exam (SSSCE) which was tailored to just Ghanaian students, and called for the current WASSCE module to be scrapped.

“Is it necessary for us to join a WASSCE community and be writing the same examinations? That concept ought to be discarded because it is absolutely an outmoded concept,” he stated.
