Stay Away From Registering - NPP Warns Non-Citizens

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Dormaa Central constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region have warned aliens, particularly Ivorians, to stay away from registration centres in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise in the area.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana is conducting the exercise to enable eligible Ghanaians who do not have their names on the electoral roll to be registered, ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections on November 7, 2016.

But Seth Asare, Dormaa Central Constituency Organiser for the NPP, told Accra News on Friday April 29 that the party had taken a measure to forestall registration by foreigners which characterised previous exercises.

The constituency borders the Ivory Coast and has a strong Ivorian presence mainly due to trade. But according to the NPP executive, the party paid a visit to the chiefs of all Ivorian communities dotting the border a week before the exercise to advise their subjects to refrain from attempting to register.

He said on the NPP team’s return trip, they stopped at Adukwasie, a settlement in the constituency, and performed some rituals at the bank of the river that flows through the community.

He said they asked the god of the stream to deal with any foreigner who would cross the water body in his bid to enter Ghana and register to vote.

The limited voter registration runs from April 28 to May 8, and is expected to register about 1.2 million Ghanaians.
